You've put your finger on the crucial asymmetry. Indeed, Trump does call Democrats "communists," but you don't hear Democrats systematically calling Trumpian Republicans "cultists" or "neofascists" even though the latter labels are much more defensible than "communists" is for Democrats.

The asymmetry is rooted in the difference between urban and rural America. We're talking about different calibers of people here. Each tribe has its advantages and disadvantages. Overall, I'd say that urban populations tend to be more decadent and feminine, whereas the rural ones are coarser and more masculine.

As a result, President Trump faced little threat of being assassinated even though he tried to retake power in a coup. But if Trump had been a Democrat and his opponents rural Republicans, he'd have been assassinated ten times over.

All the potential assassins and revolutionaries, as it were, are in the backwoods, rural areas of the country. Urbanites are far too urbane and effeminate to deal honorably with potential tyrants. The same was true for the Weimar Republic which was culturally ill-equipped to reckon with the existential stakes of Nazism.
