You're talking about the exoteric side of Christianity (the gospel narratives). I'm talking here about mysticism, monism, and the esoteric, perennial spiritual traditions.
In the gospels, Jesus's altruistic morality makes for an ironic critique of conventional society. We expect those who succeed in human terms will succeed in the afterlife, but instead the first will be last and the last will be first. And we presume the messiah or savior would be a mighty king, but he dies on the cross.
So the exoteric Christian story is still subversive, but there's a difference between the myth and the metaphysics.
