You're making my point for me, regarding the cosmic perspective. The point isn't that this perspective is useful; rather, it's that it's inevitable, so it's a curse, a downside of intelligence and objectivity. Reason thus conflicts with the humanist's prejudice in favour of our species. We're all special, for humanists, because humanism is anthropocentric: our species alone has rights, according to how we implicitly define progress.
