You seem to think I'm arguing that Harris will lose. I'm making no prediction either way since it's too close to call. Even if Harris wins, Trump's supporters are going nowhere, so the issues I'm raising here for the Democrats would still apply. The appetite for a Trumpian protest or vengeance against the establishment will remain. Would that retribution be entirely undeserved? Have Democrats been saintly since the 1990s? They've been better than the Republicans, but maybe not good enough. And liberalism itself is in question, given the global rise of authoritarianism. What we need is an updated defense of the secular humanist project.
