You say, "the pursuit of opulence can sometimes blind them [the wealthy] to their ethical responsibilities."
That's an understatement.
Obviously, wealth brings power which is known to corrupt the empowered person's character so that ethics becomes an afterthought at best. The wealthier you are, the more likely you'll think morality is for suckers and the weak. Like Nietzsche said, it's "slave morality."
