You might be right, although that behaviour might apply to a group of ants rather than to a single ant, which is what I was dealing with. Even if ants draw a distinction between living and nonliving matter, could an ant fathom how a giant dislodges a worm with a tool? Of course, ants might not be able to register the mystery since they might lack the capacity for awe. But what was ordinary for me should have seemed miraculous to the ant. As Arthur C. Clarke said, "Any sufficiently advanced piece of technology is indistinguishable from magic."
