You might be giving Sentell too much credit. He might have been talking about a much vaguer sense of God's "prescence" in nature, rather than a pseudoscientific proof of God with a teleological argument. "Experiencing God in nature" sounds more like admiration for beauty in nature, than like a God-of-the-gaps strategy. But it could be both.
