You did recommend that book already. The question at issue for the authors of The Dawn of Everything is whether there's an evolutionary, progressive relationship between prehistory and history, or whether we should view our prehistoric ancestors as essentially equal to us in terms of their mindset.
It's a thorny question, I think, since there are clearly positivistic prejudices which are misleading, yet there's this other model I'm defending, the comparison of historical stages to the stages of individual growth from childhood to adulthood.
