Yet explaining how we came to moralize, based on evolution, isn't the same as explaining the moral force of values, or how values or ideals emerge from facts. This is why I talk more broadly about the existential condition, because it adds philosophy to cognitive science and evolutionary biology, to provide a fuller picture that addresses a crucial meta-ethical issue: Is morality illusory, as in nihilism, or is humanism, for instance, a profound response to basic facts of life?
