Yes, I'm familiar with that hypothesis, but I suspect the truth is simpler. Instead of the Romans actively inventing Christianity, Hellenized Jews would have done so to adapt to the new environment after the destruction of Jerusalem in the late first century. It was a case of occupying a new niche, of quasi-Jews ingratiating themselves with Rome by putting a Roman spin on Jewish themes. It was syncretism.
