Yes, I think I see your point, but I think it's important to retain a big-picture historical perspective. That's why I speak of even late-modern countercultures as being "neoshamanic." That doesn't mean philosophers, artists, and the like need to be as tribal, petty, or confused as ancient gurus and priests. We can learn what not to do by studying the past, even as we understand our necessary continuity with those earlier stages.
