Yes, I saw that weakness when I wrote that line, but I left it in because even as a figure of speech it makes the absurdity clear. Natural selection goes to great trouble in that this is an anomalous, fragile process spanning billions of years. Granted, the effort isn't literal since the process is impersonal, but it's certainly an involved process that will come to nothing in the end. Thus, it's pretty absurd.
