Yes, civilization may not be sustainable, but that's not the same as saying that its downfall is always ironic (and irony is sort of the topic in this article). The ancients thought in terms of cycles, so they could have accommodated the Spenglerian idea that all societies end. Only when a society is messianic about its chances of enduring forever might its downfall be comical and ironic.
