Yeah, that makes sense. I made the same point about the oddness of creating imperfect creatures and blaming them for being what they are, in my long recent email debate with a Christian:

I said to him, "autonomy makes us people rather than animals. If God made us, he made us free, and if your god wants free creatures to be slaves to him, your god is a monster."

The theology of educating or perfecting our souls adds a wrinkle to this, but that theology is usually universalist, so it wouldn't entail the monstrousness of eternal punishment in Hell.
