Yeah, I think an existential perspective puts secular and religious frameworks on somewhat comparable grounds, but the strengths and weaknesses of each in different settings vary enormously. So I don't know about "impartiality," but I aim to adopt an existential take on these questions. Fundamentally, what are religion and science? How do they figure in our basic condition in life? We use science, philosophy, history, and even religion to state the nature of that condition, but we do so ironically, without unduly attaching ourselves to any parochial mindset. Thus, we build up an overview, albeit one that's not perfectly neutral. On Kantian and pragmatic grounds, I don't think cognitive neutrality is even possible.
