Wright provides the standard evolutionary psychological explanation. I riff on it in another article (link below). And yes, there would be a conflict between our civilized roles and our natural ones. This is complicated, though, because the evolutinary psychological explanations are often gratuitous. The archeological and anthropological evidence may count against the Jordan Peterson style of pseudo-explanation.
It's plausible there was a division of labour in the Stone Age, based on men's and women's biological differences. But specialized social roles weren't so prominent in those prehistoric groups. At least, that's what The Dawn of Everything suggests. (Of course, I'm no expert on any of this.)
South Park did an episode on this unintended consequence of feminism, which is the feminization of men. Wokeness and indentity politics are making gender seem fluid, but reality may have the last laugh. There seems like a toxically feminine illusion that matches in craziness the masculine myth of manliness. In other words, this issue is indeed fraught.
