Wow, that's quite the misinterpretation. I don't regard myself as a hero for helping an ant. That's a preposterous strawman.
The question of "character" is about whether to live according to what I call farfetched supernatural explanations, which are always available precisely because they're tantalizing but empirically empty. Does living according to supernatural explanations automatically make you heroic and moral? No. As I argue elsewhere, some myths are better than others.
I was raised as a secular Jew, and I'm an atheist, as you can tell from my other writings. I'm ambivalent about secular progress, but on nontheistic grounds. See, for instance, this article on the conflict between capitalism and technological progress:
