What I meant there is that mass society typically approximates the animalistic social default. Liberalism is perhaps the least natural culture, and for that very reason it's fragile and vulnerable to "conservative," regressive tendencies that re-impose more straightforwardly evolutionary constraints. Dominance hierarchies emerge just like in the wild even though we're supposed to have progressed.

Moreover, mass society typically ignores our obligation to moderate our impulses in a way that doesn't just enslave us to an upper class. Mass society is unenlightened. To be sure, the masses are domesticated, so we don't all behave like wild animals. But we're not fully human (i.e. transhuman) either because we lack a philosophical perspective or the discipline to eliminate unworthy tendencies in ourselves and in our societies. We just go with the inner and outer flows, letting nature take the wheel.
