We're on the same page there. I've written a lot about that separation since I think it's crucial to understanding the meaning and the behaviour of civilizations. Recently, I wrote a series on alienation which addresses your point that consciousness may be inherently alienating. There's also a Heideggerian theme in what you said about how consciousness might, rather, connect us specially to nature (or to Being, as Heidegger would say).
