We're freer in that we have more self-control, more veto power over our instincts. We have layers of neural processing and of cultural reflection that detach us from our impulses, and allow us to think and to make individual choices, rather than just expressing tribal habits or genetic causes. So our mental and cultural power put us on a long leash, as it were. We're not omnipotent, in having the ability to override all natural conditions. But we're insulated from many natural pressures, which enables us to express ourselves as unique individuals. That's autonomy.
