Well, there's Phillip Mainlander's dark speculation that the universe is God's dying body, heading inexorably towards absolute extinction. Entropy would be the God-killer. Then again, on Roger Penrose's model, the universe will boot itself up again in a cycle of Big Bangs. And I believe that's consistent with some Hindu cosmology too.
For me, the trick is to imagine what the universe could be doing wildly and monstrously, without positing anything as human-like as intelligent design or intention. The question is what exactly is the wildness of the cosmic wilderness.
