Well, the priests become intermediaries or representatives of God, like human angels. The Catholic Church is a classic example. God is suppose to express his will via the Holy Spirit which is found in the church, and the church is interpreted not just as the Christian collective but as the institution that started with Jesus's handing of the baton to Peter.
