Well, the Jesus Myth theory is still a small minority position among historians. That's partly because most specialists are Christians and they work for departments that force their members to sign Christian pledges.
But yes, I don't want to scare people away from the Jesus Myth view even though it did flourish on the internet, along with more dubious conspiracy theories.
However, I also don't think atheism or the rejection of Christianity hinges on this question of Jesus's historicity. Skeptics have plenty of reasons to condemn this religion even if they concede that there was a historical Jesus. That's why I wouldn't bother to cover up where this theory has its base of support.
