Well, the Genesis story was cobbled together as a response to earlier myths that went back to the Sumerians, such as to the "The Song of the Hoe," which says that a chief god named the important persons are "recruited them to provide for the gods."

Also, "working" in paradise wouldn't really be work, as such, would it? Work in the pejorative sense is onerous so there would be no such work in Eden. Work, as in toil that's distinguished from play, becomes possible only with the curse of having to live outside the walls of Eden.
