Well, the ancient Greeks were conservative rather than progressive in that respect. That's partly how they rationalized their patriarchy and practice of enslaving barbarians: these institutions promoted social stability rather than reform. The myth of Prometheus was like the biblical myth of the Tower of Babel, the conceit being that we could progress to the point of joining the gods in a transhuman state. The science-centered, liberal world secularizes that ambition.
