That bell works the same as alerts on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and all the other social media platforms that take their cues, in turn, from Las Vegas slot machines. It's all about the hits of dopamine, the conditioning, and the addicting nature of these devices, as the documentary The Social Dilemma points out out.

You know you're slightly addicted when you reload Medium just to check if that bell has turned green and you can almost feel the hit of dopamine, the inner satisfaction fall into place.
