Well said. Shortcuts indeed. We can't zoom in on our special concepts without losing the comprehensive overview, although we pass between concepts or mental maps so quickly that we get a sense of knowing lots of things at once, like how an animated film plays out by passing quickly between frames.
And I agree that objectivity in that sense of being relatively humble and skeptical about our powers is possible and desirable. Sometimes, at least, we can be more like hermit crabs than snails wedded to their shells.
