Well said. Besides being a platitude, I’d say Democratic centrism betrays the feminine values of the Democratic Party, as compared to Republican machismo. There’s a cultural divine in the United States which isn’t just about economic inequality, since the divide goes back to the Civil War.

I wonder if one concern moderate Democrats have is that if they stopped pretending the country could be united, they might have to recognize that Republicans want to destroy liberal culture, since Republican voters believe liberalism is the work of the devil. Can the more sophisticated, tolerant and high-minded Democrats come to grips with the possibility that the Republican Party hasn’t acted in good faith for decades, that it’s a cheating, parasitic cancer in the nation?
