Well, predicting the future can be amusing but it's not so easy. So who knows what will actually happen?

As Thomas Frank shows in The Wrecking Crew, the Republicans have been foxes guarding the hen house. Their main libertarian motive is to sabotage government on behalf of big businesses that want everything privatized and government out of the way. By acting badly in government and especially by doing nothing for the majority of Americans, while in power, the Republicans undermine the Democrats' message that democratic government can work for everyone.

And as long as the majority of Americans don't wake up and blame just the libertarian Republicans rather than the Democrats or the whole system, since the Republicans have also conned them with the rhetoric on the wedge issues, the con can continue and the Republicans can keep winning elections to work in a government they can't stand. It's all quite absurd and based on exquisite cynicism.
