Well, maybe these days there's more cult-like patriotism outside the military than inside it. The soldiers might be more like the objects of worship than the worshippers.

Women can be masculine too (just as some men can be feminine or not so manly). Fighting wars calls for masculine virtues. Ending or preventing wars diplomatically would call for feminine ones.
