Well, if prehistoric foragers were animistic, then of course their societies were sustainable since they were more animalistic rather than fully behaviourally modern. We know they were sustainable because the Stone Age lasted for millions of years whereas full-blown civilizations have been around for no more than ten thousand years.
Animism seems to me a kind of anesthetic, a way of blocking the alienating effects of reason/objectification, to comfort those who lack the technological know-how to evacuate nature's wild conditions.
