Well, I'd flip that around. Dominance hierarchies came first, and then the theological reifications, the extrapolating from our civilized social order (with a cabal of royals at the top), and the rationalization of those social inequalities by contending that the state of the earth is reflected in heaven.

It's not just an arbitrary analogy since idol worship and religious worship are sociologically and historically related. As Thomas Hobbes said, we must fear the human sovereign so that we'll obey the law. That social contract came first in the advent of civilized social hierarchies, and polytheistic religion was used as the mythos to brand that ethos.

And remember that the movie industry hasn't only ranked stars by their box office draw. There have always been critics who made more subjective judgments in their movie reviews.
