Well, I write about those interesting, transhumanist scenarios elsewhere. I agree that the promethean race to progress is about us becoming gods, so in that ironic sense we're escaping from atheism. But the narrow meaning of theism, of whether the universe was created by a person, is another story.
The simulation hypothesis is interesting, but even that wouldn't be equivalent to theism since it would amount to one universe creating another. The theist's God is an uncaused cause, not just one being in a higher universe.
I agree that atheism is escapable by the masses who don't think philosophically about their religious beliefs, but that's a psychological matter. My article is about the logical inevitability of atheism because of theism's incoherence.
