Well, I have room for the finding of metaphors or allegories in the gospels since I think they're mostly fictional. But Jesus's final cry there is an allusion to Psalm 22, so the intended meaning is found in that psalm: even if you doubt God, your faith should bring you back to trusting and praising him, etc.

Still, I agree that the esoteric meaning of Christian theology is likely closer to Gnosticism or secular humanism.
