Well, I don't practice Buddhism. But yes, I can see why an enlightened person would still be "expected to follow the rules of daily living." But as I argue in the article linked below, that's a political point, whereas my analysis here is psychological. Buddhas might have to hide the nihilistic implications of enlightenment to fit into society or to continue to attract unenlightened followers. That's a political need for propaganda. The question I'm raising here, though, is whether a Buddha would be psychologically able to feel compassion, regardless of social niceties.
