Well, elitism can certainly become toxic and decadent. And our secular search for social progress may prove vain and self-destructive in the end. But ask most folks if they'd rather live in the ancient world (where most people would be slaves) or in the liberal social order where we attempt to maximize everyone's potential. I think most would prefer to live here and now.
The difference between the more elitist ancient world and the more egalitarian modern one isn't wholly vain or illusory. The social progress is real, and it happened largely in spite of the tribal elitism of hypocritical religious institutions.
Theistic religion doesn't make us all feel at home in the universe. It makes us long for supernatural life in the miraculous kingdom of God. It makes us fear demons and hell, and despise and demonize those who reject our hobbyhorse. That kind of religion is a force for tribal disintegration, and egalitarian secular humanism is in the process of overcoming it.
