Well, Catholics betrayed that countercultural idealism long ago (link below). The betrayal started with the eschewing of Jesus's Jewishness, to curry favour with the very empire that destroyed both Jesus and his Jewish (Temple-based) religion.

But yes, the hypocrisy is appalling.
