We should expect religious countries to be corrupt, because theocracy, the political empowerment of a religion is antithetical to spirituality. The spiritual or existentially authentic lifestyle is one of humility and withdrawal from nature's absurdity. When you seek earthly dominance, you're turning your religion into a hollow disgrace. That incoherence gives license to all manner of corruptions, because the theocrat has cut himself off from his moral compass.

But yes, consumerism doesn't look like a viable alternative religion--unless we manage to use technology to become a starfaring species, as in the transhuman scenario.
