We all share more than just raw self-consciousness, though. We're members of the same biological species, with a common evolutionary origin. Our existential condition is the same, too--not just self-consciousness, but embodied consciousness in a tragic relationship with the natural environment. You can say that that environment is illusory, but that would amount to a re-description of the same existential condition.
You don't really show here what's wrong with the more sci-fi advancement, with the use of high technology to master the "illusory," natural realm. The sci-fi conjecture that godlike advances are possible is based on the historical experience of our advancement as people who've transcended the confines of animality.
