Volume One of Schopenhauer's main book is very intimidating because of how it's organized, with long paragraphs and hardly any chapters or sections divisions. But his writing style itself is readable. Volume 2 has more chapters, so it's easier going.

Schopenhauer was known to have been cantankerous, and that was partly because he was bitter from having been overtaken by Hegel in academia.
