Trump's an extreme case, which is why I didn't focus so much on him here. He's an entertainer and a cult leader, not a real politician. I'm talking about the mundane lies and spin that all politicians engage in when in public.

I also think that's not quite why CNN got criticized. CNN did try to go after Trump in that Town Hall, but they did so mainly by quibbling rather than by trying to get to the bottom of what Trump is. So Trump steamrolled them. CNN got criticized for trying and then failing to go after Trump, and thus for giving him a platform to spew his outrageous lies and slander. Trump destroyed CNN because CNN is as fake as Trump, but much more pretentious.
