Totalitarian Hamas has occupied Gaza roughly since Israel left it in 2005. Israel has restricted Gazans' freedoms in various ways, because Hamas has been dedicated to violently ending Israel as a homeland for Jews.

So you're reversing things. The resistance to Israel (in the form of a rejection of Israel's right to exist) came first, followed by Israel's defensive measures of restricting Palestinians' freedoms.

I'm not justifying the killing of civilians. I'm saying that war isn't really bound by law. The laws of wars are bureaucratic whitewashes since war violates more basic laws.
