Those who just follow what's popular are the lemmings I spoke of in the article. They'd jump off a bridge if everyone were doing it. A democracy filled with folks who can't think for themselves is broken in all kinds of ways.
But you say the system isn't broken. Indeed, it isn't broken for the consumers since they have a world of choices to explore, including in this case all kinds of stuff to read for free or for next to nothing. As you say, there are far too many online contents for anyone to read in a lifetime.
But the system's broken for the content producers. As I say in the article, there's no middle class for writers. You either somehow become one of the few superstars or you're writing for slave wages. Would you say there's nothing to fix in slavery either?
Or take your MacDonald's analogy. You really think there's nothing to fix with the fast food industry? How about the global warming that accelerated from Big Agra's having to destroy so many trees to keep all the livestock we slaughter?
