Whether it's science alone or science plus philosophy that makes for atheism is a quibble. Science struck the death blow by showing us that nature is counterintuitive. The traditional religions are based on intuitive projections of familiar categories, such as personhood, onto the unknown. Philosophers simply point to that clash which is resolved by positing atheism.
