Those are my suspicions too, but they seem to imply that spirituality is antisocial. This fits into my view of how large societies generate countercultures. The most spiritual or existentially authentic individuals withdraw from the charades needed to sustain civilization, and explore reality and creative possibilities without compromise, becoming philosophers, artists, monks, and the like. Cults may form around them, and some might go viral, becoming religions that propagate themselves with yet more charades and stifling conventions that set the stage for another round of countercultural withdrawals.
