This is indeed a disappointment for Westerners like me to learn that even countries with supposedly more mature religions can behave in a Trumpian fashion. Hinduism is supposed to be a more spiritual religion than monotheistic ones, the latter being focused on the vain issue of superficial adherence to a creed. Hinduism is supposed to be about seeing through the illusions of earthly success, politics, and even religiosity.

As I say in my old article on Hinduism, though, I think the problem is Indian eclecticism. There was the Vedic, caste-based, sacrificial religion, and then there were the Upanishadic insights, and the Jains and Sramana or renouncer religions.

But Hinduism tried to encompass and systematize all of the above, which in practice allows Hindus to have it both ways. They can focus on business, politics, family, religion, or spirituality (moksha), and still be considered good Hindus. They would just occupy a different part of the vast Hindu system. The problem is the system is incoherent because the Sramana traditions are subversive and antithetical to the more worldly ones. So I call it a false synthesis. Mind you, I'm hardly an expert on Hinduism, but that's my take on it.
