This is a nice comprehensive take on the issue, but I think you set up a strawman in your definition of "physicalism" when you say it's the claim that, "the only type of things which exist are physical." That definition precludes property dualism. Physicalism is better understood as the view that all things are at least or are simply/fundamentally physical. That means physical things can evolve higher orders of regularity, including mental ones.
