This falls in line with CP Snow's point about the two cultures of academia. The media creation of new atheism--which has already fractured along political lines--was dominated by scientific atheists as opposed to philosophical ones. Much of scientific culture is infected with scientism, with a condescending prejudice against the humanities. That scientism is a hangover from positivism, as philosophers know. The old atheists, by contrast, including Nietzsche were more philosophical and existential.
So it's a question of fashion in packaging the atheistic upshot of modernity.
