This article isn't really about Dawkins. He's just the setup to the point at issue. But I believe the cultural Christianity thing came up in an interview. It's not like Dawkins shifted his whole worldview to emphasize the preference for this hollow Christianity. As I recall, Dawkins has always said he appreciates Christian-inspired art, such as classical music and old poetry.

It's not just that new atheism is no longer transgressive; at least, it's no longer transgressive because new atheists beat back the fundamentalists, so new atheism succeeded in that respect. Still, new atheism broke up because of a political conflict that's still hampering liberal humanists. And the fundamentalists are back under Trumpism. So we could use a New New Atheism, or some equivalent form of aggressive opposition to right-wing insanity.
