There’s the Egyptian ankh, too, which symbolized eternal life and which is much older than Christianity. Christians say their religion only coopted foreign symbols to appeal to foreigners, or that these are just coincidences. Syncretism, though, is the typical process of a new religion forming on the basis of other ones.
